Where Learning Comes Alive

A 9th–12th high school in Spring Branch, Texas, where education unfolds through direct experience in a forest setting by the river.

Our Mission

We redefine high school education for kinesthetic learners through an experience-based, inclusive, and holistic environment. By inspiring, supporting, and removing barriers through creativity, connection, and purpose, we help students develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to learn how to learn.

Why Us:  Forest STEAM Academy redefines high school education by creating an environment where technology, nature, and purpose intersect. Designed for kinesthetic learners, our experience-based approach encourages students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while essentially learning how to learn. Through projects and portfolios, students demonstrate deep understanding while being supported in an inclusive, holistic setting. Families can expect a community where students are encouraged to challenge themselves, grow in confidence, and meet academic standards through direct experience.

  • Inclusive & Holistic Environment — We provide an inclusive and holistic setting designed to support the whole student.

  • Creativity, Connection & Purpose —Learning is guided by creativity, connection, and a clear sense of purpose.

  • Empowering Outdoor Challenges — Students are encouraged to grow through empowering challenges in a beautiful riverbank setting.

A Word to Families:

We are living in a time of unprecedented change—and our teens feel it. Anxiety, disconnection, and uncertainty are at record levels. Many adolescents are searching for something to hold onto.

Forest STEAM Academy exists because we believe connection is the antidote. Connection to the land. Connection to purpose. Connection to a community that sees them, challenges them, and believes in who they're becoming.

Research consistently shows that nature-based education reduces stress, improves focus, and builds emotional resilience. When teens have meaningful work to do with their hands, real problems to solve with their minds, and a safe space to process what they're carrying in their hearts—they don't just survive. They thrive.

This isn't just an alternative to traditional high school. It's also a lifeline for the kids who need something different—before they find something harmful.

Our Story:

Jessica Milner

During my time away from work I enjoy chasing horizons—hiking rugged trails, paddling both quiet and rowdy rivers, and camping beneath our canopy of stars. Road trips have become moving meditations, opportunities to explore new landscapes and collect experiences. My curiosity extends beyond the great outdoors, diving deep into metaphysics, theology, and pondering the big questions that linger long after sunset.

My earlier chapters included leading my daughters' Girl Scout troops, coaching soccer and basketball, directing a cheer squad, running art workshops and outdoor classroom lessons, and teaching in the BSF school program. Those past mentorship roles continue to shape my view of community and connection.

For nearly two decades I co-owned and managed an IT business, with my main responsibility being project management—roles that allowed me to link subject-matter experts together and help create win/win/win situations. I enjoyed translating technical jargon into shared understanding, watching teams click, and celebrating the small victories that arise from seamless collaboration. That experience now informs how I organize curricula, coordinate staff, and foster a collaborative learning environment.

But the seed for Forest STEAM Academy was planted during a season of profound personal change. After experiencing significant loss, I spent time working at a campsite nestled in the woods by the river. The land did what no lecture or textbook could—it restored me. I also worked alongside people carrying heavy burdens of their own, struggling with addiction and hardship, and I couldn't help but wonder: what if they had been given this kind of grounding earlier in life? What if, during those formative teenage years, someone had offered them a place where nature, purpose, and community came together?

That question became a conviction, and that conviction became this school.

Outside the administrative sphere, Kundalini Yoga instruction channels the same sense of flow, guiding students toward physical vitality and inner clarity. It is my belief that technology, nature, and spirituality can intersect to create richer, more purposeful lives—a passion that fuels both my educational leadership and community-focused endeavors.
